Michael Horwitz practiced as a general dentist for 40 years full time in Santa Monica, CA. Twelve years ago he started carving wooden dogs and cats in his own unique folk art style on a part time basis. He now has reversed his professions and practices on a very limited basis in Ventura, CA. while devoting much of his time to wood carving.
Since he started doing his life size wooden pet carvings, he has discovered a true joy to the challenge of bringing these pets to life in wood with his slightly whimsical flair that will make you want to smile and hug and kiss your wooden pet all at the same time. As he always strived with his dentistry to achieve that “wow factor” when the patient first saw a simple restoration or an extensive reconstruction, he does the same with his carvings.
Michael fashions each wooden carving individually from pictures supplied by the owner to duplicate the image and spirit of your animal friend and hopefully get that big WOW and a lifetime of smiles.
Michael has more recently expanded his portfolio even further as he loves carving birds (check out his “Best-In-Show” Harris Hawk right here), fish (blue gill carving), boxes (monarch butterfly box) and other carvings like his mini-mushrooms, big horn sheep and winged unicylce.
Michael also turns custom pens offering various designs in woods and acrylics, ball points and rollerballs. The prices range between $40 and $95.
